In April 2025, 18-year-old Steven Houseman was arrested after ambushing and choking a 15-year-old girl in broad daylight as she walked home from school in Thornton, Colorado. Houseman was identified by a classmate who recognized his vehicle and subsequently confessed to police that he attacked the stranger with the intent to sexually assault her. Although he pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping and attempted sexual assault, Houseman received a suspended 8-year prison sentence, resulting in only 90 days of jail time followed by 10 years of probation and sex offender registration.
