Authorities in Wisconsin say 23-year-old Cora Laskiewicz, who had severe autism, died in January 2023 weighing just 70 pounds after years of isolation and lack of medical care under her mother’s guardianship. Investigators determined Cora died from dehydration and malnutrition, ruling her death a homicide, and charged her mother, Amy Laskiewicz, with recklessly subjecting an at-risk individual to abuse causing death. Amy later entered an Alford plea and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the judge comparing Cora’s condition to victims of World War II concentration camps. A Florida mother was arrested after her 12-year-old daughter reported that she was injured when her mom allegedly pressed a powered drill with a screw against her during what the mother later claimed was meant as a joke. Investigators say the child suffered bleeding and a visible injury, and further interviews with the children raised additional concerns about their safety at home. A heartbreaking case out of Brookland, Arkansas, centers on Courtney Newsom, a mother charged with manslaughter and child endangerment after her one-year-old son, Brady, drowned in the bathtub. Newsom initially told police she left the bathroom for less than two minutes, but investigators later discovered she may have been gone for up to 15 minutes, leading to her arrest.
