On May 10, 2011, Kristopher Miller was shot dead outside his home in Minneapolis. His girlfriend, Kim Griffin, reported her estranged husband, Derrick Griffin, stalking her. Investigators linked Derrick to the murder via cell phone records, ballistics, and surveillance, convicting him of first-degree murder in 2012. He received a life sentence without parole.
In 2005, Summer Baldwin's body was found in a Lubbock landfill, showing signs of severe abuse and positional asphyxia. A UPC tag linked Rosendo Rodriguez to the suitcase used. He was convicted in 2008 for her and another victim's murders, receiving a death sentence, which was carried out in 2018.
In 2018, 16-year-old Iyana Sawyer of Jacksonville, Florida, went missing. Investigators focused on her uncle, Johnathan Quiles, who was convicted of three first-degree murders but received life imprisonment without parole. On February 13, 2023, 21-year-old Garrett Hughes was shot and killed in Key West, Florida, during an altercation with Lloyd Brewer over urinating in a parking lot. Brewer, charged with first-degree murder, faces trial in 2026. His self-defense claim was rejected, as the court found no evidence Hughes threatened Brewer, and Stand Your Ground laws did not apply.
In November 2021, 66-year-old Spanish teacher Nohema Graber went missing and was found dead in a nearby park on November 3. Investigation linked her death to two 16-year-old students, Willard Miller and Jeremy Goodale. Miller received a life sentence with parole eligibility after 35 years in July 2023.
On June 30, 2011, 27-year-old law student Lauren Giddings was reported missing after her family noticed she had stopped communicating. Stephen McDaniel, who admitted using a master key to enter her apartment on June 26, strangled her, dismembered her body, and disposed of most remains in a campus dumpster. Her torso was found in a trashcan after police failed to collect it. McDaniel pleaded guilty to murder in 2014, receiving a life sentence with parole eligibility in 2041.
In 2016, homeless man Nicholas Loulakis met 63-year-old Terry Wilt at a gay bar, where Wilt offered him shelter. The encounter ended fatally, with Wilt found stabbed 56 times. Loulakis, arrested three days later for theft, confessed to the murder and received a 25-year prison sentence.
In 2018, 10-month-old Mary Anne Welch died in Michigan, weighing just 8 pounds. Her parents, Tatiana Fusari and Seth Welch, faced scrutiny over their care. Seth Welch was convicted of first-degree murder in 2020 and sentenced to life imprisonment for her death.
In a 2023 case, Mary Yoder and Alex Morgan faced charges after three children under 7 and a malnourished dog were found in deplorable conditions. The 4-year-old victim, Judah Morgan, was discovered naked, bruised, and unresponsive. Yoder pleaded guilty to neglect resulting in death (Level 1 felony) and neglect (Level 5), receiving 42 years. Morgan received 70 years.
In July 2018, David Callaghan murdered his 54-year-old girlfriend, Martha Freitag, in Akron, Ohio, beating her to death and burying her body. He later burned her belongings and tampered with evidence. Callaghan pleaded guilty to murder and related charges in March 2019 and received a life prison sentence.
On April 21, 2008, Fred Engel was murdered outside his home while retrieving mail. On March 24, 2017, in Cleveland, Ohio, Randall Satterwhite and Joseph Timko attempted to purchase illicit substances. Joseph was shot, fled, and later died. Quintine Walker, the killer, received a plea deal, avoided homicide charges, and was convicted of gun offenses, set for release in 2026.
