Loophole allows man who confessed to killing Cheryl Grimmer to walk free 60 Minutes Australia (2019)
Working out who abducted and then murdered three-year-old Cheryl Grimmer from a crowded Wollongong beach almost 50 years ago should be easy. Eighteen months after the sickening crime a man claiming to be the killer admitted it. He gave detectives a detailed confession. But surprisingly, that admission didn’t mean it was “case closed”. As Tara Brown reports, cursory police work and an extraordinary legal technicality has meant the confessed murderer has never been prosecuted for the crime, and remains free. For the Grimmer family the insult of knowing that, combined with the loss of their beautiful Cheryl, is as painful today as it ever was. But it hasn’t lessened their incredible resolve to fight for justice. EXCLUSIVE: Disturbing insight on Canada's teen killers 60 Minutes Australia (2019)
For thousands of Australians every year Canada is a wonderful place to visit. It’s not only spectacular but also one of the friendliest and safest countries on earth. However, four weeks ago something awful happened there. A young Australian tourist, Lucas Fowler, and his American girlfriend, Chynna Deese, were murdered. Days later a Canadian university professor was also killed. The attacks were random, unprovoked acts of violence, but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police quickly linked the crimes. Disturbingly it seems the perpetrators were two teenage boys who then went on the run, becoming Canada’s most wanted fugitives. On Thursday they were finally found, dead. For the last two weeks Sarah Abo has been the only reporter to spend time with the distressed father of one of the boys. Abo and her team were with Alan Schmegelsky as heavily armed police and soldiers scoured Canada looking for his 18-year-old son, Bryer. She also spoke with him in the moments after he found out Bryer was dead. In an extraordinary series of interviews Mr Schmegelsky tries to explain the circumstances that may have led his child down a path of evil. Solving one of Australia's oldest cold case murders 60 Minutes Australia (2019)
In a Brisbane court, one of Australia's most horrendous crimes was finally solved when 78 year-old Vince O'Dempsey was found guilty of murdering young mother Barbara McCulkin and her two daughters, 13 year-old Vicki and 11 year-old Leanne. In all likelihood, the evil thug O'Dempsey will now spend the rest of his life in prison, along with another monster, his 70 year-old co-accused, Garry Dubois, who was convicted of the crime in a separate trial late last year. The murders happened 43 years ago and had been one of Queensland's oldest cold cases. But as Ross Coulthart reports in this major 60 MINUTES investigation, the brutal crime was only solved because of the incredible dedication of two unassuming police detectives who convinced two vital witnesses to do the unthinkable - to break a four-decade-long criminal code of silence (2017). A deal with the devil to catch a killer 60 Minutes Australia (2019)
What Mark and Faye Leveson have been through to discover the truth about the death of their son Matt is extraordinary. In September 2007, 20-year-old Matt vanished after a fight with his older partner, Michael Atkins. Atkins denied having any involvement in the young man's disappearance, and sensationally claimed Matt was still alive. But Mark and Faye always suspected Atkins was a cruel liar, and was in fact responsible for their son's death. However, to expose his deceit, and most importantly to find Matt's body, the Levesons had to agree to a horrible deal with the devil. It meant Atkins received immunity from prosecution - a free "stay out of jail" card - for revealing where he buried Matt. At the same time Atkins also gave police his explanation of how Matt died from a drug overdose. Mark and Faye say it's more lies, but in a major 60 MINUTES investigation, Tara Brown uncovers yet another surprising twist in this long-running case (2017).
