Today’s true crime case takes us to just after midnight on Friday March 13 2009 when North East Ambulance Service received a 999 to a report of a man having collapsed at a property at 14 Arthur Street in the town of Chilton in County Durham in the UK. When paramedics attended they found 35 year old Andrew Gardner, a vulnerable man due to underlying cognitive issues, dead in the living room he had been tortured for a number of weeks with his body covered with new and old injuries. 3 People were responsible, 24 year old Simon Clare, 44 year old Steven Martin and the ring leader 28 year old Clare Nicholls a sadistic psychopathic manipulator who not only inflicted horrific injuries on Andrew but did this in front of her young children and even encouraged them to participate. Today’s true crime case takes us to April 2nd 1988 when 22 year old Christopher Bryson jumped out of the second story window of 4315 Charlotte Street in Kansas City in the midwestern state of Missouri in the US. He had just escaped the clutches of a man who had raped, tortured and murdered 6 men over the last 4 years, Robert Berdella. The sadistic nature of his crimes is almost beyond belief and he was dubbed the Kansas City Butcher by the press. Today’s true crime case is about Joachim Kroll who was a German serial killer who killed at least 13 girls and woman as well as one man between 1955 and 1976 in the Ruhr area of West Germany. Today’s true crime case takes us to September 2013 when the partial skeletonised remains of 36 year old Elaine O’Hara were found in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains in the Republic of Ireland. Elaine had been missing for a year and her family and the Police had been desperately searching for her this entire time. Elaine was vulnerable, she had a history of mental health issues and had fallen into a world of depraved sexual, being abused and abused by men. Unfortunately, she fell into the web of Graham Dwyer, a depraved sexual sadist who murdered Elaine. The evidence recovered by the Police was nothing short of horrific including thousands of messages where Elaine was referred to as slave and Dwyer was master with him repeatedly telling her about his intention to stab and kill her. Today’s true crime case takes us to 2nd July 2018 when the small Scottish isle of Bute was thrust into the national headlines when Alesha MacPhail was abducted from the home of her father having arrived just 3 days before, raped and brutally murdered before her broken body was found dumped like rubbish. On 19th September 2021 Derbyshire Police in the UK received a phone call from Damien Bendall confessing to killing 4 people, including his pregnant partner, her 2 children and another child who was at the property for a sleepover. He also raped one of the children while they lay dying. Gary Heidnik was an American double murderer and serial rapist with a hatred of women who, over a 4 months period between 1986 and 1987, abducted 6 women off the streets of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and held them in a dungeon he constructed at his house. He beat. tortured and raped his captives and, whilst 4 of them were miraculously saved, 2 were murdered and dismembered. In 2015 28 year old Mark van Dongen, a Dutch national was in a relationship with Berlinah Wallace, a woman almost 20 years his senior. During their 5 year relationship Mark had been abused emotionally, physically and financially by Wallace and was trying to escape from her control. Wallace would not have this and, in the early hours of September 23 2015 she poured concentrated sulphuric acid over him when he was in bed, causing truly horrific injuries and intense pain as his skin melted. Mark survived this attack but eventually died in truly tragic circumstances. Richard Chase was an American serial killer, cannibal and necrophiliac who slaughtered 6 people in the space of a single month between December 1977 and January 1978 in California leading to him being dubbed “The vampire of Sacramento”. Katherine Knight is an Australian murderer and the first woman to be sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison. She was a domestic violence perpetrator and her relationship with her victim, John Price was characterised by violence and threats of murder. She eventually went through with her threats and, in February 2000 she stabbed John to death, skinned him and butchered his body, cooking his organs intending to feed them to his children. Luis Garavito is a Colombian serial killer who, between 1992 and 1997 murdered at least 140 children however it is believed that he killed between 300 and 400 children making him the most prolific serial killer in modern history. By the time he began his rampage he had already raped and tortured hundreds of children. His crimes were truly horrific and characterised by rape and sickening acts of torture.
