The case of Jerry and Bobbie Barber centers on the rescue of Stacey Gunter, Bobbie’s older sister, from a home in Baldwin County on November 28, 2023. Deputies arrived after a worried relative reported that she had not seen Stacey in months, even though Stacey was believed to be living at the house with Bobbie, Jerry, and their children. At first, the visit appeared to be a welfare check, but officers quickly sensed that something was wrong. Bobbie seemed nervous and evasive, repeatedly giving explanations that did not match the seriousness of the situation. As deputies moved farther inside, they discovered that Stacey was in urgent need of help and had been kept in conditions that suggested long-term neglect rather than a short-term crisis. Jerry later arrived and, like Bobbie, tried to explain away what officers were seeing, but their answers did not account for Stacey’s condition or why she had been left without proper care. Stacey had lived with mental illness for much of her life and had previously been cared for by her parents, but after their deaths, she came under Bobbie and Jerry’s care. Instead of receiving support, she was isolated and left in a state that shocked the officers and medics who responded. Investigators detained Bobbie and Jerry while emergency workers focused on getting Stacey out of the home and into medical care. During interviews, detectives tried to understand not only what had happened, but why Stacey had been kept there if the couple had no intention of caring for her properly. Bobbie’s statements suggested a long-standing resentment toward Stacey, while both she and Jerry struggled to give a clear explanation for how things had reached such an extreme point. In January 2024, a Baldwin County grand jury indicted Bobbie and Jerry Barber on charges including exploiting and intimidating a disabled adult or elder, neglect, and false imprisonment. The case is remembered as a deeply troubling example of a vulnerable family member being hidden away and denied the care she needed, while the people responsible for her welfare offered excuses instead of accountability.
