Living in their Jackson, Michigan apartment, a 31-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man were a mismatched couple. The man was a high school graduate and fast food worker, but life had dealt him a rough hand. He suffered from scoliosis and meningitis, had physical abnormalities, and was cognitively impaired because of fetal alcohol syndrome. These conditions were so debilitating that even managing basic tasks like paying bills was a monumental challenge. The woman had issues too, but of a completely different nature. She lived in 13 different foster homes, had a history of domestic violence, and was known to abuse substances frequently.
