On October 1st, 2020, in Spokane, Washington, a 15-year-old boy’s mother heard the boom of gunfire just outside her door. When she emerged, she discovered her son, an intelligent, creative kid who was a whizz at math, dead from a single gunshot wound to the head. For months, her whole family had been subjected to repeated threats from a nearby gang, who were trying to intimidate her 15-year-old and 13-year-old sons into joining. Tragically, their refusal led to the boy’s completely avoidable death. Using footage from a nearby restaurant, police were able to identify the car involved in the shooting as belonging to the mother of a 20-year-old man.
