Every year, 25,000 inmates are released from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in Huntsville, taking their first steps back into the free world. This film captures the raw emotions of release day, where excitement clashes with the overwhelming shock of freedom. Many men, institutionalized after decades inside, are left with only $50 and a choice to make at the bus station: start the arduous journey toward a new life, or fall back into old habits. We witness the life-saving efforts of a small community providing basic dignity—clothing, food, and emotional support—and explore the heartbreaking reality that without family backing, the vast majority of ex-felons are set up to fail, leading straight back to the cage they just left.
