On the 31st of July, three bodies were discovered in their home. 77-year-old Voncile Smith, 49-year-old Richard Smith and 47-year-old John Smith were found beaten to death with a hammer and their throats slit. Richard was also shot behind his left ear. It was determined that they were murdered 3 days prior. 58-year-old Donald Hartung (the subject of this interrogation) was the half brother of Richard and John Smith, and the other son of Voncile Smith. He lived nearby, and was at the family house the night of the murder for dinner... He was brought in for questioning by homicide detectives... This is that interrogation. (SPOILERS BELOW) Investigators discovered that Hartung had been excluded from his mother, Voncile's will but would be the sole heir to her nearly $1 million estate if his mother and both half-brothers were deceased. A co-worker also told police that Hartung had previously bragged about inheriting the money. A crucial turning point came when a jailhouse informant provided detailed information that only the killer would know. The informant claimed Hartung confessed to torturing his mother to get the safe combination and piling clothes on the bodies to make it harder to determine the time of death. The informant also detailed how each victim was killed (hammer blows, slitting throats, and a gunshot for Richard). Donald Hartung's murder trial began on January 21, 2020 and ran through January 29, 2020. A jury found him guilty. While he was facing a potential death penalty, but the jury could not reach a unanimous decision, which is required in the state of Florida. He was instead sentenced to three consecutive life sentences with no possibility of parole. Hartung is currently serving his sentences at the Graceville Correctional and Rehabilitation Facility.
