Canadian Serial Killers

Clifford Robert Olson Jr., known as the "Beast of British Columbia," was a Canadian serial killer who murdered 11 children and teenagers in British Columbia between November 1980 and July 1981. His victims, eight girls and three boys, ranged from nine to 17 years old and were abducted from communities around Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Olson was arrested in August 1981 after police surveillance caught him attempting to pick up two young hitchhikers. He pleaded guilty to 11 counts of first-degree murder in January 1982 and received 11 concurrent life sentences with no parole eligibility for 25 years. He remained imprisoned until his death from cancer in September 2011.

Wayne Clifford Boden became one of Canada's most infamous serial killers after sexually assaulting and murdering four women in Montreal, Quebec, between 1969 and 1971. Dubbed the "Vampire Rapist" by the media because he bit several victims during the attacks, Boden became one of the first Canadian killers to be convicted using bite-mark evidence. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and remained incarcerated until his death in 2006.

Karla Leanne Homolka became one of Canada's most infamous female killers after participating in the murders of her younger sister, Tammy Homolka, Leslie Mahaffy, and Kristen French alongside her husband, Paul Bernardo, between 1990 and 1992. Initially portrayed as a battered spouse, Homolka secured a controversial plea agreement before investigators discovered videotapes documenting her active participation in the crimes. She served 12 years in prison and was released in 2005, making her one of the most controversial offenders in Canadian criminal history.

Allan Joseph Legere, known as the "Monster of the Miramichi," was a Canadian serial killer, rapist and arsonist who murdered five people in New Brunswick between 1986 and 1989. Already serving a life sentence for the 1986 murder of shopkeeper John Glendenning, Legere escaped from a hospital in May 1989 and spent seven months terrorising the Miramichi region, murdering Annie Flam, sisters Donna and Linda Daughney, and Catholic priest James Smith. He was captured in November 1989 following a massive manhunt and convicted of the four murders in 1991, with DNA evidence playing a major role in the prosecution. Legere remained imprisoned for the rest of his life and died at Edmonton Institution in March 2026.

Robert William Pickton became one of Canada's most infamous serial killers after murdering women from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside during the 1990s and early 2000s. Convicted of six murders but believed by investigators to have killed many more, Pickton targeted vulnerable women, many involved in sex work or struggling with addiction, before disposing of their remains on his rural pig farm in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. The investigation exposed major policing failures and remains one of the largest serial murder cases in Canadian history.

Paul Kenneth Bernardo became one of Canada's most infamous serial killers after committing a series of violent sexual assaults and the murders of three young women between 1987 and 1992. Before his arrest, Bernardo was responsible for numerous unsolved sexual assaults in the Toronto area, earning the nickname the "Scarborough Rapist." Alongside his wife, Karla Homolka, he murdered Tammy Homolka, Leslie Mahaffy, and Kristen French. His conviction remains one of the most significant criminal cases in Canadian history.
