British Offender Profiles

Britain's long criminal history developed alongside major changes in policing, courts, prisons and forensic investigation. During the Victorian period, the country moved from relatively rudimentary detective methods toward increasingly professional criminal investigation. The National Archives notes that at the beginning of the Victorian era there was effectively no police detective force in Britain, while by the end of the reign the Criminal Investigation Department had been established and basic forensic testing was being used.

The Whitechapel murders of 1888, attributed to the unidentified offender known as Jack the Ripper, became an early example of a major police investigation receiving enormous public and press attention. The National Archives records that the Metropolitan Police investigation generated hundreds of letters claiming to come from the murderer, illustrating the extraordinary public fascination surrounding the case. The killer was never identified.

Britain's later criminal history produced a very different generation of notorious offenders. Peter Sutcliffe, known as the Yorkshire Ripper, was convicted of murdering thirteen women and attempting to murder seven others. Fred and Rose West became associated with multiple murders at their Gloucester home, while Harold Shipman was convicted of murdering patients in his care. Dennis Nilsen was convicted of six murders and admitted responsibility for further killings.

Other cases demonstrate the breadth of British violent crime. The Moors murders, committed by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, involved the killing of five children in the 1960s. The Clapham Common murders, the Soham murders, the Dunblane massacre and other major investigations represent very different circumstances and offender classifications.
