Modus Operandi - Body Disposal

Gary Ridgway, known as the “Green River Killer,” is an American serial killer responsible for the murders of dozens of women in Washington State during the 1980s and 1990s. He targeted vulnerable individuals, often sex workers and runaways, and became one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history. Ridgway evaded capture for nearly two decades before advances in DNA technology led to his arrest in 2001. He later pleaded guilty to multiple counts of murder and received numerous life sentences, ensuring he would remain imprisoned for the rest of his life.

Charles "Chase" Merritt murdered his business associate Joseph McStay, Joseph's wife Summer, and their young sons Gianni and Joseph Jr. after financial problems developed around the water-feature business Merritt worked on with Joseph. The McStay family disappeared from their Fallbrook, California, home in February 2010, beginning a mystery that lasted more than three years until their remains were discovered in shallow graves in the Mojave Desert near Victorville. Financial records, cellphone evidence and other circumstantial evidence eventually focused the investigation on Merritt, who was arrested in 2014. A jury convicted him of four counts of first-degree murder in June 2019, and he was formally sentenced to death in January 2020.

Christopher Gregory Davis murdered his boyfriend, 56-year-old Barry Schmalbach, in Cape Coral, Florida, after Schmalbach planned to end their relationship in July 2023. Although Schmalbach's body has never been recovered, investigators built an extensive circumstantial case showing Davis using his boyfriend's financial accounts, purchasing items associated with concealing and disposing of a body, renting an isolated property under a false identity and attempting to dispose of tools. In June 2025, a Lee County jury convicted Davis of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and eight identity-related offences. He was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 45 consecutive years.

Ashley Britt McArthur murdered her friend, 33-year-old private investigator Taylor Wright, near Pensacola, Florida, in September 2017 after Wright sought the return of $34,000 she had entrusted to her for safekeeping. Prosecutors established that McArthur had already spent much of the money before taking Wright to her family's rural property in Cantonment, where she shot her and concealed her remains beneath concrete and potting soil. Cell-phone records, financial evidence and surveillance footage helped investigators reconstruct McArthur's movements. She was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder in August 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a mandatory minimum of 25 years.

Chandler Michael Halderson murdered his parents, Bart and Krista Halderson, at their home in Windsor, Wisconsin, in July 2021 as his father began uncovering years of deception about his education, employment and future plans. Halderson killed and dismembered his parents, attempted to destroy and conceal their remains, and then reported them missing while claiming they had travelled to the family's cabin. Investigators dismantled his story through forensic evidence, digital records and location data that connected him to sites where remains were recovered. A jury convicted Halderson of both murders in January 2022, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Kalen Schlatter is a Canadian convicted murderer who killed 22-year-old Tess Richey after meeting her in Toronto's Church-Wellesley Village in November 2017. Schlatter accompanied Richey to a secluded outdoor stairwell, where prosecutors established that he sexually assaulted and strangled her before leaving her body concealed at the location. Richey's mother discovered her body several days later after conducting her own search. Schlatter was arrested in February 2018 and convicted of first-degree murder in March 2020. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

Dillon Alexander Waller is an American man convicted of the 2022 murder of his mother in New Mexico. The crime occurred within a domestic setting and involved attempts to conceal the offence. He was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Jack the Ripper is an unidentified serial killer responsible for a series of murders in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. His crimes shocked Victorian society and became one of the most infamous unsolved cases in criminal history. Operating over a short but intense period, the killer targeted vulnerable women and carried out highly violent attacks before disappearing without identification. His ability to evade capture, combined with the brutality of the crimes and widespread media attention, has cemented his place as one of history’s most enduring criminal figures.
