Joseph James DeAngelo, known as the "Golden State Killer," became one of the most infamous serial offenders in American history after committing a series of murders, rapes, and burglaries across California between 1974 and 1986. A former police officer, DeAngelo evaded identification for more than 40 years before investigators used investigative genetic genealogy to identify and arrest him in 2018. His case transformed modern criminal investigations and demonstrated the power of forensic DNA technology in solving long-unsolved crimes.

Lawrence Sigmund Bittaker became one of the most infamous serial killers in American history after murdering five teenage girls alongside accomplice Roy Lewis Norris during a five-month period in Southern California in 1979. Operating from a customized van that became known as the "Murder Mac," the pair targeted runaway and hitchhiking teenagers before killing them and disposing of their bodies in remote mountain areas. Bittaker was convicted of five murders and sentenced to death, remaining on California's death row until his death in prison in 2019.

Leo Boatman became notorious after carrying out a deadly stabbing attack on Bournemouth beach in England in 2024. Lindsey Robert Rose is an Australian serial killer who murdered five people in New South Wales between 1984 and 1994. His victims included acquaintances and vulnerable individuals who were killed over a ten-year period before advances in forensic science and renewed investigations linked Rose to the crimes. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to five terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole and remains incarcerated.

Lori Norene Vallow Daybell became one of the most notorious criminal defendants in the United States after her two youngest children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan, disappeared in Idaho in 2019. Their remains were discovered buried on the property of Vallow Daybell's fifth husband, Chad Daybell, in June 2020. Vallow Daybell was convicted in Idaho in 2023 of murdering both children and conspiring to murder Tammy Daybell, Chad's first wife, and was sentenced to three consecutive life terms without parole. She was subsequently extradited to Arizona, where she was convicted in 2025 of conspiring to murder her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, and her niece's former husband, Brandon Boudreaux. She received two additional consecutive life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years.

Lyle Menendez became one of the most infamous figures in American true crime history after he and his younger brother, Erik Menendez, were convicted of murdering their wealthy parents inside their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989. The shocking nature of the killings, combined with the family’s image of wealth and privilege, turned the case into a global media obsession throughout the 1990s. Lyle was portrayed by prosecutors as manipulative, arrogant and motivated by greed, while the defense argued he was a deeply traumatised son shaped by years of alleged emotional, physical and sexual abuse inside the Menendez household. Decades later, the Menendez brothers case remains one of the most debated family murder cases in American criminal history.

Martin Bryant became Australia’s most notorious mass murderer after carrying out the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania on April 28, 1996. Armed with semi-automatic rifles, Bryant killed 35 people and injured 23 others across multiple locations around the historic Port Arthur tourist site, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern Australian history. The massacre shocked Australia and triggered sweeping national gun law reforms under Prime Minister John Howard. Bryant’s name became permanently associated with mass casualty violence, firearm legislation, and public trauma across the country. The scale of the killings, the randomness of the victims, and the horrifying duration of the attack turned the Port Arthur massacre into one of the most historically significant crimes in Australian history.

Mikhail Viktorovich Popkov, known as the "Angarsk Maniac" and "Werewolf," is a former Russian police officer who murdered women across the Irkutsk region between 1992 and 2010. He typically approached women at night in his police vehicle, offering them rides before taking them to isolated locations where he sexually assaulted and murdered them using weapons including knives, axes, screwdrivers and ropes. Popkov was arrested in 2012 after DNA testing connected him to the killings and was subsequently convicted in multiple trials. By 2026, courts had established his responsibility for 91 murders and three attempted murders, making him one of Russia's most prolific serial killers. He is serving life imprisonment in a special-regime prison in Mordovia.
