Nikolas Jacob Cruz became one of the most notorious mass killers in modern American history after carrying out the February 14, 2018, shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Armed with a semi-automatic rifle, Cruz murdered 17 students and staff members and wounded 17 others before fleeing the campus, making it one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history. The massacre shocked the world and sparked an unprecedented movement led by student survivors demanding stronger gun laws and improved school safety. Cruz's history of behavioral problems, mental health concerns, online threats, and numerous contacts with law enforcement became central to public debate following the attack. The shooting permanently changed the national conversation surrounding school violence and mass shootings.

Patricia Dianne Krenwinkel was one of Charles Manson's most devoted followers and participated directly in the Tate-LaBianca murders that left seven people dead over two nights in August 1969. At the Tate residence, she chased and repeatedly stabbed Abigail Folger, and the following night participated in the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, later using their blood to write messages at the crime scene. Krenwinkel was convicted in 1971 of seven counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to death, which was reduced to life imprisonment after California temporarily abolished capital punishment. She has spent more than five decades in custody, becoming California's longest-serving female prisoner. Although parole boards have repeatedly found her suitable for release in recent years, Governor Gavin Newsom most recently reversed a parole grant in October 2025, finding that she continued to pose an unreasonable danger to society.

Patrick Crusius is an American mass murderer responsible for the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting in Texas. The attack was premeditated and motivated by extremist ideological beliefs. He was arrested shortly after the incident and later convicted on multiple federal charges, receiving life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Richard Benjamin Speck became one of America's most infamous mass murderers after murdering eight student nurses during a single night in Chicago, Illinois, on July 13–14, 1966. The attack at a South Side townhouse generated worldwide attention and became one of the most notorious crimes in American history. Speck was convicted of eight counts of murder and sentenced to death, although his sentence was later commuted to imprisonment following changes to U.S. capital punishment laws. He died in prison in 1991.

Robert Pape was convicted for his role in the 1998 Pinyon Pines murders, a triple homicide that remained unsolved for nearly two decades before advances in DNA technology revived the investigation. Prosecutors established that Pape and Cristin Smith entered the Friedli home in September 1998, murdered Vicki Friedli, her daughter Becky Friedli and family friend Jon Hayward, then set the residence on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. Following renewed forensic testing and a lengthy cold-case investigation, Pape was convicted in 2018 of three counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Shane Devon Tamura became the perpetrator of one of New York City's deadliest shootings in decades after opening fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower on July 28, 2025. The attack killed four people and injured several others before Tamura died by suicide. Investigators concluded that he had intended to target the National Football League (NFL) headquarters housed within the building and found writings indicating grievances related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), although the full motive remains under investigation.

Susan Denise Atkins was one of Charles Manson's earliest and most devoted followers and participated directly in the Tate-LaBianca murders that left seven people dead over two nights in August 1969. At the Tate residence, Atkins helped restrain the victims, fatally stabbed actress Sharon Tate and wrote the word "Pig" on the front door using Tate's blood. She also participated in the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night. Convicted in 1971 of seven counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, Atkins was initially sentenced to death before her punishment was reduced to life imprisonment after California temporarily abolished capital punishment. She remained incarcerated until her death from brain cancer in 2009.

Thayne Ormsby is an American man convicted of a 2010 triple homicide in Maine. At the age of 20, he carried out a violent attack resulting in multiple deaths within a single incident. He was later arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
