On November 25th, 2020, firefighters in Mount Morris, Illinois, responded to reports of smoke billowing from a home. Upon arrival, they encountered heavy smoke and the piercing sound of fire alarms. Once the flames were extinguished, firefighters conducted a search of the residence and discovered a female, unconscious, on the kitchen floor. The victim, identified as Melissa Lamesch, was quickly moved outside to a waiting ambulance. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, it was too late to save her or her unborn baby. The circumstances surrounding the fire raised suspicions, with smoke and burn patterns at the scene suggesting that the fire had been intentionally set, prompting the firefighters to contact the Ogle County Sheriff's Department for a thorough investigation. Deputies reached out to Melissa's family members and learned that the father of her unborn baby was a man named Matthew Plote. Family members also revealed that Matthew had been at Melissa's residence on the day of the fire and might have been the last person to see her alive. Armed with this crucial information, detectives brought Matthew in for questioning to further investigate the tragic incident.
