On April 19, 2023, at approximately 10:45 p.m., 20-year-old Alexa Bartell was driving northbound on Indiana Street in Jefferson County, Colorado. She was on a phone call with a friend when the line abruptly went silent. After being unable to reach her, the friend used a location-tracking app to find Alexa’s last known position and located her vehicle off the road in a field. A large landscaping rock had been thrown through the windshield, fatally striking Alexa inside the vehicle. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Around the same time, deputies were receiving reports from other motorists whose vehicles had been struck by large rocks while driving in Jefferson and Boulder Counties between approximately 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. that night. Detectives compared these incidents and identified a pattern involving large, round landscaping rocks thrown from a moving vehicle. Investigators collected rock evidence from each scene and obtained surveillance footage from nearby residences and businesses. Several cameras captured a black Chevy Silverado traveling through multiple incident locations during the relevant timeframes. Detectives then obtained geofence warrants to collect anonymized cell-phone data from the affected areas. A small number of devices appeared at multiple scenes, including one associated with the household of 18-year-old Joseph Edwin Koenig. A tip from an acquaintance led investigators to two additional individuals who were reportedly with Koenig that night, and who had been seen gathering landscaping rocks earlier in the evening. Based on cell-phone data, surveillance footage, witness interviews, and the timeline of events, detectives identified three suspects: Joseph Edwin Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik, and Zachary Kwak.
